Secret Girl (free verse poem)

I was lost and confused
– the world spinning –
I reached for the first hand I could find.
And I found you.

You took me in, and sheltered me from the world.
I was hidden from sight for too long.

You kept me secret, like
a hidden treasure with a story to tell.
I had no story,
no world, no love, nothing to give you.

You made me think I was special;
I was gifted; I was important.
But I wasn’t anything.

Now I’m alone, and darker for it.
But at least I’ve escaped the grip of your fingers
that I once longed for.
