Fathers Day (poem)

I’m not handing you presents and a cup of tea

I’m not asking if you need anything.

I’m not going to sit down with you for a while

and listen to your bad jokes and pretend to smile.

We’re not going to spend the day trying not to argue

All for the benefit of national-days-dedicated-to-you.

We’re not going to hug and laugh and take a selfie

and we’re not going to sit down to Sunday tea.

I’m not going to do any of this for you

because you’re not here to give the gifts to.
