He and She (free verse poetry/prose)

She opens the door

like he opens his heart –

tentative, but determined.

She invites him in

and he accepts.

They’re shy, but smiling.

She holds his hand

and he comforts her.

Both in pain, learning to cope.

She confides in him

He listens.

Thinking they understand each other.

But the girl walks in

the one with the long hair and the blue eyes.

He stops listening

She stops smiling

The girl gets the guy

but she’s left alone.

She shuts the door

to the rest of the world.

He regrets his choice

two minutes too late.

The girl goes,

fading into society.

He and she try again

but there’s no trust anymore.
