New Boy On The Block (poem)

New boy on the block
All alone in his house.
Just got a job in the hardware store.
Earning minimum wage.

New boy on the block
Having a late one with his new work buddies.
Joining the local football team.
Painting the front door white.

New boy on the block
Takes a friends sister out for a drink.
Buys throw pillows to make the front room nicer.
Takes his girl out dancing.

New boy on the block
Asks for her hand in marriage.
Gets a promotion at work.
Books their first holiday.

New boy on the block
Says I do in front of everyone.
Goes on his honeymoon, comes back with a tan.
Buys a white picket fence.

New boy on the block
Celebrates the arrival of his newborn boy.
Sells his bike and buys a car.
Scrapes together the cash for a savings account.

New boy on the block
Supports his wife and kids.
Buys the store he worked in.
Plants a tree in the garden.

New boy on the block
Watches his children graduate.
Retires a happy man.
Loves his wife every night.

New boy on the block
isn’t the new boy any more.
He’s an old man on the front porch,
smiling at the life he’s made.
